If you’re planning a European getaway, there’s one less thing to worry about for now.
The European Union has once again postponed the launch of its Electronic Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS).
ETIAS is an online pre-travel screening. Once it goes into effect, U.S. travelers will need the ETIAS authorization before traveling to any of the 30 European countries that require it. The application is expected to cost €20 for most adult travelers and the authorization will be valid for three years. Currently, travelers are not required to obtain authorization before visiting participating European countries.
The EU recently removed its previously announced late-2026 launch target, citing ongoing technical and operational challenges related to the Entry/Exit System (EES), the new border management platform that must be fully operational before ETIAS can be introduced.
While no new official launch date has been announced, industry experts now expect ETIAS to begin sometime in 2027. Until then, U.S. and other visa-exempt travelers can continue visiting Europe under current entry requirements.
Note: ETIAS is not yet accepting applications. Travelers should avoid any third-party websites claiming to process ETIAS authorizations at this time. The European Union has stated that it will announce the official launch date several months before the system goes live.
